    Why Attend IWARI2005? 

The Competitive Challenge 

A consensus has emerged that conventional incremental improvements and cost reduction strategies are insufficient and even counter-productive for 21st Century competitive advantage.  Moreover, existing radical innovation strategies are too slow and uncertain for viable creation of the high growth industries now required for sustained economic growth and job creation. A dramatically accelerated radical innovation process has become critically important!  This situation is the direct consequence of worldwide diffusion of knowledge and industrial capability, resulting in reduced costs of long distance transportation and exponential growth in low cost internet and cellular transmission of data and information.  These have irreversibly exposed North American production and service sectors to low cost labor regions of the world.   

 Rationale For The Workshop

 

Leading scholars and industrial innovation practitioners from around the world have conceived a vision for accelerated radical innovation that could improve the development of technology and industry clusters by a factor of 2X-10X as measured by reduced time and cost and increased success rate. They envision a flexible, interactive radical innovation framework (Figure 1) that would closely couple existing processes of discovery, commercialization and diffusion through effective real time utilization of computer science and telecommunication tools.  They further envision that pre-competitive, multidisciplinary alliances between industries, universities and governments focused on strategically positioned geographic regions can dramatically accelerate radical innovation in key industry sectors. The IWARI2005 Workshop program agenda http://www-iwari2005.eng.utoledo.edu/pages/Program.htm will facilitate the conversion of this vision into a workable methodology for accelerating the radical innovation process.

Desired Workshop Outcome

 

Invited plenary and overview speakers will address the grand challenges of accelerated radical innovation (Figure 2) http://www-iwari2005.eng.utoledo.edu/pages/Speakers.htm for industries based on information, materials, manufacturing, transportation, agriculture, and energy. Workshop brainstorming sessions will develop and document an advanced framework of knowledge, principles,  information tools and methodologies that can be applied by practitioners and theoreticians to achieve a 2X-10X improvement in accelerated radical innovation, via information enhanced technology and economic cluster development.  The Workshop organizers request participants to submit comments at http://www-iwari2005.eng.utoledo.edu/pages/Comments.htm to guide brainstorming sessions addressing the grand challenges of accelerated radical innovation. Workshop outcomes will be published on a CD after Workshop Advisory Committee review.
